As we move through the fall and into the winter month’s, it’s time to prepare your home for the cooler temps. Here’s a handy “to-do” list to help make it through to the spring:
- Shut off interior valves supplying outdoor water pipes.
- Repair any interior wall damage; patch/paint as needed.
- Check/Re-grout tile in all bath/kitchen areas. Add silicone sealer as needed.
- Check/change HVAC filter monthly.
- Regularly check for ice dams and icicles.
- Tighten any handles, knobs, racks, etc. Check for loose screws/bolts.
- Check/Repair/Replace all locks and deadbolts on doors and windows.
- Replenish winter supplies: sidewalk/driveway salt, shovels, etc.
- Develop plans for spring/summer home improvements.
- Re-open interior valves to outdoor water pipes at end of winter season.
And don’t forget to keep doing the following monthly, regardless of the season:
- Check/Replace HVAC, Furnace, and/or Electronic Filters
- Check visible wiring and cable for wear or damage.
- Check Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)
- Check fire extinguishers.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; replace batteries, if necessary.
- Run citrus peels or ice through garbage disposer.
- Run hot water and baking soda through drains.Clean faucet aerators & shower heads.
- Check/Replace all interior and exterior lighting/bulbs.
- Remove lint & debris from dryer exhaust hose & outside damper. Check hose for kinks.
